"Bluff your way to power — or catch your rivals in a lie."

Setup
Shuffle the deck of 15 cards (5 roles: Duke, Assassin, Captain, Ambassador, Contessa, 3 cards each). Deal 2 cards face-down to each player (2-6 players). Place the remaining deck aside. Each player starts with 2 coins (or 1 coin in some editions).
How to Play
- On your turn, you must take one action: Income (gain 1 coin), Foreign Aid (gain 2 coins), Coup (pay 7 coins to force another player to lose one influence), or an action from your role cards (e.g., Duke - gain 3 coins, Assassin - pay 3 coins to assassinate a player, Captain - steal 2 coins from another player).
- When you take an action, other players may Challenge (say 'I don't believe you have that role'). If you are challenged, you must show your role card. If you have it, the challenger loses one influence. If you don't, you lose one influence (and reshuffle that card into the deck).
- Players may also Bluff: claim a role they don't have.
- Players may Counteraction (e.g., Contessa blocks an assassination, Captain blocks stealing, Duke blocks Foreign Aid).
- When you lose your second influence (both cards revealed), you are out.
- The game ends when only one player remains.
Winning the Game
The last player with at least one influence card wins. There are no points; elimination determines the winner.
Variants & House Rules
Coup: Reformation adds the Inquisitor and allegiance mechanics. Coup: The Resistance is the same game with different art.
